My mom and dad were married on Christmas Eve, 1937. Nine months later I was born in October 1938. The joke told by my dad’s brother at my parent’s 50th anniversary was that after their wedding in Elkhart, Indiana, my parents got in the car and drove off to my father’s new job with General Electric in Connecticut. En route they stopped for their first night as a married couple in Fort Wayne. As a new husband, my dad was getting a little frisky. My mother said, “You know sweetheart, now that we’re married you can go a little further.” So, they got back in the car and drove to Cleveland.

In those first days as a GE executive trainee when dad got his first big raise of $1 per week, my parents moved from their second-floor walk-up apartment to a downstairs first-floor apartment. And new assignments had them bouncing back and forth from Connecticut, to Virginia to Maryland and back to Connecticut.

Dad was GE’s representative to the government in the war effort in Washington DC during early part of WWII, then decided, although now nearly 30-years old, he needed to get in the war. Dad joined the Navy and signed up for duty on PT boats. He followed JFK at different training bases and also served in the Philippines where Kennedy’s PT 109 was run over by a Japanese destroyer. My mom and I lived with my grandparents in Indiana during those war years, one set living in Elkhart another in South Bend.

After the war, the GE transfers continued. Changing schools every year probably didn’t do me any good academically, but I learned to never be shy when it came to meeting new friends.

My own Navy career meant duty station transfers and more moves. After the Navy, I had a four-year experience in the insurance business working for a future Governor of Maine and then a 30-year career in an electrical wholesaling business, the Kirby Risk Supply Company.

So, here I am retired in Bloomington, Indiana, as busy as I was when working for a living. It’s sure been a gypsy’s life but I can’t say I regretted any of those frequent moves. You certainly didn’t find any moss growing on this rolling stone.
